One of North San Diego’s gems, the upscale community of Olivenhain is hidden among the fruit orchards on the North County’s lush rolling hills. Olivenhain, which means “olive grove” in German, has a lovely rural atmosphere that attracts people from other parts of San Diego and from all over the country. Fill your lungs with fresh air, explore the trails that meander throughout the area, and feast your eyes on the starry night sky in this verdant Encinitas enclave as it offers you fine country living, Olivenhain style.
Olivenhain is located in the easternmost portion of Encinitas, bounded by the neighborhoods of New Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carlsbad. It’s only a short drive away from North San Diego’s beaches and approximately 25 miles away from Downtown San Diego.
Olivenhain is home to some of the most desirable real estate in North County. Custom-built, detached single-family residences are plentiful and are located on lots that can go up to five acres in size. A mix of low-key homes, rambling ranches, country estates, and luxurious mansions are found in this exclusive, affluent neighborhood.
There are only a handful of stores and restaurants in Olivenhain as it is a primarily residential neighborhood. Residents look to adjacent communities for amenities not found within the area. For shopping and dining options, head to the southwestern border of Olivenhain and wander the streets of El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard. Downtown Encinitas also features more dining and entertainment options.
Olivenhain does not lack in recreational opportunities, however, as it is home to an extensive network of biking, walking, and horseback-riding trails that wind around the community. Residents can access the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve by heading to the end of Taegan Lane. San Elijo also features a dog-friendly lagoon trail. For horse lovers, the Little Oaks Equestrial Park at Lone Jack Road is a must visit.
